Consultation Services

A nutritional consultation will cover the following areas:

  • Weighing (on the Horseweigh bridge) and body condition scoring
  • Discuss current routine and management
  • Detailing current feeding regime
  • Discussing any areas of concern and what you are aiming to achieve from the new diet, such as weight gain or loss, improving condition of the coat or feet, and specific clinical nutrition needs
  • Following the visit, I will formulate a new diet regime based on the information obtained at the visit.

There will be a follow up phone call to discuss progress (and a follow up visit in the months after implementing is recommended).

This consultation is charged at £75 for yards based within a 20-mile radius of Umberleigh.

One off weighing: £25 per horse or £15 per horse for more than three on the same yard.

Importance of Accurate Weighing

I use the most recent Horseweigh Tokyo Thoroughbred Mini with EziWeigh 7 software, which is a portable weighbridge allowing me to accurately weigh your horse in their own environment.

It has improved ramps designed to be more encouraging for the horse to step onto. The clever design allows me to weigh on hard surfaces, soft surfaces (such as in a school or field) and on slight gradients, making it adaptable to most yard environments.

Knowing an accurate weight of your horse is not only a key fundamental to formulating a correctly balanced diet but is also important for many other reasons including:

  • Being aware of subtle weight changes that could predispose to diet-related disorders, such as laminitis (weight gain and loss is easy to miss when we see our horses every day)
  • Accurate dosing rates for worming and medication. Inaccurate dosing rates have aided the rise of antibiotic and wormer resistance
  • Carrying the average horses and tack, are you under your legal towing limit when transporting?
